What is Monoi Tiare Tahiti?
Monoi is refined coconut oil in which fresh tiare (Tahitian gardenia) flowers are macerated. Under the Monoi de Tahiti Appellation d'Origine, it must be made in French Polynesia from Polynesian coconuts and tiare flowers. Parfumerie Tiki has made Monoi Tiki Tahiti in Papeete since 1942.
Why is there a flower in the bottle?
Every bottle of Monoi Tiki Tahiti oil holds a dried tiare flower. Parfumerie Tiki added it to show that the oil is the original monoi, and the flower in the bottle is its trademark.
Which scent should I choose?
Every Monoi Tiki Tahiti oil starts as Monoi Tiare Tahiti. Tiare is the original. Vanille is soft and warm, Tipanie (plumeria) is delicate, Pitate (jasmine) is the strongest floral, Ylang Ylang is sweet and exotic, Santal (sandalwood) is woody and unisex, and Coco is a soft, non-floral coconut scent. Why is my monoi solid or cloudy?
Monoi hardens below 68°F (20°C), like any coconut oil, and may look cloudy or streaky as it starts to set. Warm the bottle in warm water or in your hands and it returns to a golden liquid. The oil itself is unaffected. Do not use a microwave. More about why monoi hardens.
Using monoi
How do I use monoi oil on my hair?
Work it through damp or dry lengths and ends as a 15 to 30 minute pre-shampoo mask, or smooth one or two drops onto dry ends as a finishing oil.
How do I use it on skin?
Smooth a small amount over skin after a bath or shower, or add a few drops to bath water. If your skin feels oily, you have used too much.
Is monoi a sunscreen?
No. Monoi Tiki Tahiti oils, including Rouge, are not sunscreens and are not labeled to protect against sunburn. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and limit time in strong sun.
Will Rouge stain?
Rouge, the red monoi, can tint skin, hair, swimwear and beach towels. Use it carefully.
