Monoi oil has been part of Polynesian hair care for generations. In Tahiti, fresh tiare flowers (Tahitian gardenia) are steeped in refined coconut oil to make monoi, and island families have long smoothed it through their hair before swimming and after a day in the sun. Here is how to use it at home.
What is monoi oil?
Monoi is coconut oil infused with tiare flowers. Monoi Tiki Tahiti Tiare is the original Monoi Tiare Tahiti, made in Papeete by Parfumerie Tiki since 1942, with a dried tiare flower in every bottle. Because it is mostly coconut oil, it feels rich and conditioning, and it carries the soft, creamy scent of Tahitian gardenia.
How to use monoi oil on hair
1. Pre-shampoo hair mask
Warm a small amount between your palms and work it through damp or dry lengths and ends. Leave it on for 15 to 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition as usual. Once or twice a week is plenty for most hair types.
2. Finishing oil for dry ends
Rub one or two drops between your palms and smooth them over dry ends to tame frizz and add shine. Start with less than you think you need; a little goes a long way.
3. Before the beach or pool
Comb a little through your lengths before swimming, the way it has been used in Tahiti for generations.
4. Scalp massage
For a relaxing ritual, warm a few drops and massage them into your scalp before washing. Monoi is fragranced, so if you have sensitive skin, do a patch test first.
Why is my monoi solid?
Like all true monoi, it turns solid below 68°F (20°C). That is normal. Stand the bottle in warm water for a few minutes and it melts back to oil. Read more about why monoi hardens.
Which monoi is best for hair?
Most people start with the original Tiare. Prefer a non-floral scent? Try Coco or Santal. Love something sweeter? Vanille is a favorite. Avoid Rouge on light-colored hair, as its red color can tint.
